Boko Haram: Ex-Military Chiefs, Nigerian-Born US Soldier Give Jonathan Hard Advice

Former military chiefs have asked Jonathan to declare a total war on Boko Haram. This sentiment is also echoed by Nigerian-born U.S. Army Captain, Sunday Adebomi, who has said 'gentility' is no way to combat the Boko Haram crises.

In two separate stories carried by Vanguard and PUNCH, the military seems to agree that the time of trying to reason with Boko Haram is past, and it is now time to go fully armed against the terrorists.

PUNCH reports: "The retired senior officers, including a former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCHin seperate interviews, insisted that there was the need for the Federal Government to cut off food and fuel supplies to the insurgents to weaken their strength. They said government should engage the sect head-on to end the insurgency by the group .

To prosecute the war, they also advised the Federal Government to consider other alternatives to the United States on arms procurement.

Although President Jonathan had, in his nationwide Democracy Day broadcast in Abuja on May 29, 2014, directed the armed forces to launch a full-scale military operation against Boko Haram, the Generals expressed the belief that the war against the insurgents was not full-scale yet.

"Vanguard, meanwhile, quotes Sunday Adebomi as saying “There are several ways of wiping out the sect and end the killings. If government is determined to end Boko Haram today it will be achieved.

“Who are those in the sect that dare face the government? But unfortunately, I suspect there are some bigwigs behind these people.

“Mr President is being too gentle in his handling of the killings; but unfortunately, it is daily assuming dangerous dimension; gentility cannot win the war.

“Although gentility is not a crime but Mr President will have to be more aggressive because this is a security threat to the entire nation.
