Jennifer Hudson will make her Broadway debut in the fall when the musical "The Color Purple" returns.
The Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe winner will play Shug Avery, a sultry blues singer, in the production directed and designed by John Doyle, who received a director's Tony in 2006 for his own Broadway debut, "Sweeney Todd."

It's Hudson's first musical theater role since her award-winning turn in the 2006 film "Dreamgirls." Further casting and a specific theater were not announced in a statement released Friday by the show's publicists.

A 5-year-old girl died after being thrown from a bridge into Tampa Bay early Thursday and her father is facing first-degree murder charges, St. Petersburg police say.
The incident occurred just after midnight, according to MyFoxTampaBay. The girl was pulled from the water and Tampa Police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez told The Associated Press rescuers who found the girl tried to resuscitate her, but she was pronounced dead at a local hospital 2:44 a.m. Thursday.

British actor Khan Bonfils, who went by Kan, died Wednesday in London while preparing for an upcoming production of “Dante’s Inferno.” He was 42.

Standup comedian Dylan Avila was violently attacked by a man wielding a baseball bat while he was performing on stage at The Local 907 Club in Renton, Wash., Q13FOX reports.

Avila said a fellow comedian named Steve Baldwin attacked him. According to Komo News, the suspect is in jail and charges are still pending.

According to Avila, Baldwin had previously been asked by the club’s owners not to return to club because they considered his act to be too obscene for their stage.

“It was offensive on every level,” Avila said. “There was no joke told, and there was nothing humorous about it.”

Witnesses told Q13FOX the suspect snuck into the club while Avila was on stage hosting and then proceeded to get on the stage and attack him.
